South Deep Gold Mine - Gold Fields

Gold Fields is one of South Africa’s oldest companies having been founded in 1887 on the Witwatersrand by two of the early randlords – Cecil John Rhodes and Charles Rudd. In 1932 the company began mining the mineral-rich West Rand, where it discovered high-yielding gold deposits that eventually created the two richest gold mines in history – Kloof and Driefontein. A merger between Gold Fields of South Africa and Gencor’s gold interest in 1998 led to the formation of Gold Fields Limited – in essence creating the company it is today. In 2013 the company unbundled its three South African legacy gold mines into Sibanye Gold. The Gold Fields of today is a truly global miner with a focus on mechanised underground and open-pit mines, operating 10 leading mining operations across three continents.
