Coastal Radio SA: Beyond the antenna

The sales of FM radios for home use have seen a vast decline over the past two decades, as many South Africans live in areas with poor reception. Auto-mobile manufacturers have noticed the trend, and new vehicles are being fitted with radios featuring Internet streaming ability. On average, radio listeners spend 30 minutes listening to the radio whilst commuting to and from work.

The research stated that FM radio has been dying over the last decade. And this is no surprise. More than half of South Africans now own a smartphone and that number is steadily increasing. The latest generation of smartphones enable easy consumption of Internet radio via apps that can be enjoyed cross-device. Additionally, a majority of new cars have built-in options to connect your smartphone to either play mp3s or stream digital.

The sound quality of analogue radio is easily eclipsed by digital, user experience of digital is better, selection more robust and tailoring of experience to taste isn’t possible via the limited spectrum of FM.

The notion of terrestrial analogue content via FM is quaint in a digital society and is reaching an inevitable end. The good news is the personalities and content can not just survive, but thrive in a much higher quality environment.

Digital provides a better experience for audiences and sheds a legacy that pushes aside quality and creativity for profit. Advertisers and technology providers will benefit here too: the modern device landscape provides a much better experience from a measurement, content serving, customization, and brand perspective.
